The three social apps, which run on common infrastructure, all ceased working just before 5 p.m. Other apps in the same family, such as Facebook Workplace, have also ceased operating.
Visitors to the Facebook website were greeted with an error page or a message indicating that their browser had failed to connect. The WhatsApp and Instagram apps continued to function, but new material, including any messages sent or received during the outage, was not shown.
Outages on Facebook are uncommon, but they have a significant impact, not least because they affect three of the world’s most popular apps.
The company is frequently vague regarding the causes of any problems, and it rarely explains them even after they have been resolved. It had its worst outage in years in 2019, for example, and simply stated that it had “caused an issue” during “regular maintenance operations.”
Chief executive Mark Zuckerberg stated in a leaked transcript obtained by The Verge in 2019 that such interruptions are a “huge concern.” Any issues can lead to consumers switching to competitors instead, and it might take “months” to re-establish trust to get them back on Facebook’s platforms — if they return at all.
A corporate spokeswoman expressed regret for the outage but gave no indication of when it started or how long it will take to resolve it.
On Twitter, spokeswoman Andy Stone wrote, “We’re aware that some customers are having problems accessing our applications and products.” “We are attempting to restore normalcy as soon as possible, and we regret for any inconvenience.”
Shortly after, the same remark was released on the official Facebook Twitter page.
A similar update was also posted on Instagram.
It noted on its communications website, “Instagram and friends are having a little bit of a rough time right now, and you may be having difficulty utilizing them.” “Be patient with us; we’re working on it!”
WhatsApp’s official Twitter account also kept users updated.
“We’re aware that some folks are having problems with WhatsApp right now. We’re striving to restore normalcy and will provide an update as soon as possible,” it stated.
“I appreciate your patience!”
As trading opened on Monday, Facebook’s stock had already fallen substantially, owing to other ongoing criticism in the aftermath of charges made by a former employee.
However, the price continued to decline once the outage occurred, with the price dropping even further.
