Omah Lay is quickly becoming one of Nigeria’s most talked-about musical innovators, thanks to his darkly dazzling voice, intriguing storytelling, and infectious rhythms. Omah Lay’s Afro-fusion draws on his extensive experience with West Africa’s percussion-heavy highlife genre, as well as his love for the popular sounds of his time, ranging from American rap to the burgeoning Afrobeats empire in Lagos.
Omah Lay grew up in industrial Port Harcourt, a city known for oil-fueled strife, and found solace in the music that surrounded him. His grandfather and father both played percussion in Celestine Ukwu’s famed highlife ensemble. Hip-hop, however, was the catalyst for him to begin recording.
Omah Lay discovered his voice after becoming the neighborhood’s go-to guy for beats and seeing his tracks help others flourish. That alluring voice unravels themes that range from introspective to explicit throughout his breakout Get Layd EP, beautifully layered over lush and soulful instrumentals that he often creates himself.
Omah Lay’s music reveals a young man willing to share his grittiest vices and innermost sentiments through realistic settings and sincere confessions. Omah Lay also provides a fascinating glimpse into Afro-bright fusion’s and expansive future, with his roots firmly planted beneath him and a global audience tuned in to Lagos’ booming scene.
Following the great success of his debut EP ‘Get Layd’ in 2020, Omah Lay returned 6 months later with another outstanding EP named “What Have We Done.” The blockbuster hit – GODLY – was produced as part of the WHWD initiative.
