Boy Spyce is a cross between a wise old spirit in a 20-year-body old’s and an unashamed self-aware young guy. Boy Spyce is a native of Benin, Edo state, and was born Ugbekile David Osameke in Lagos, Nigeria.
His first introduction to music was through his older brother, who was in a boy band at the time. Growing up as the last child among older siblings meant looking up to them in some ways. Boy Spyce claims that it was exciting to watch him come up with melodies, put words together in a song, go to the studio, and watch him rehearse with his other band members, which inspired him to start writing songs. His first music teacher was his brother.
His journey and discovery as an artist began while he was still a student at Lagos State Model College Kankon, where some of his classmates informed a teacher of his talent after witnessing him sing to himself several times. The teacher encouraged him to perform at the school’s social gathering, where he performed Mavin Records’ hit song Dorobucci.
With his distinctly unique voice and contemplative lyrics, he became an internet phenomenon through song covers. His main goal as an artist is to write songs for every emotion a person may possibly have; he wants his music to be a soothing balm for everyone who hears it at any given time.
